Spring 2011
After enduring the winter presented to us this year, we are eagerly looking forward to a little warmer weather. Spring is just around the corner and it is time to look toward preparing for the spring and summer riding season. This is the traditional time of year for preventative health care, including vaccinations, parasite control, and any dental care that was not performed in the fall.
Our vaccination guidelines are tailored to the risk/exposure level for your horse. If you are uncertain into which category your horse would fit, or have any specific questions, please contact us.
When the pastures start to come up, we recommend submitting fecal samples from your horse to determine a fecal egg count. It is best to ensure the fecal samples are not collected within 8 weeks of a previous ivermectin treatment or within 12 weeks of a treatment with moxidectin (ex Quest). Based on the information of the fecal egg count, we can recommend a parasite control strategy to meet the needs of your horses and pasture. For more information, please contact us at the clinic.
Broodmares and foals have their own unique vaccination and parasite concerns. Broodmares should have their annual vaccines boostered 4 weeks prior to their expected foaling date, and should be dewormed 2-4 weeks prior to foaling. For more information on the vaccine requirements of broodmares, click here. Foals less than a year of age require more frequent deworming, and we recommend different products than we typically promote for adult horses. For a complete breakdown of deworming recommendations for foals, click here. Vaccinations for foals are similar to those for adult horses, but need to be delayed to an age when their immune system will respond best and then boostered appropriately. Please link to our detailed recommended foal vaccination protocol.
